About me

Andrea Rose Baker

Army veteran. Self-taught programmer. Builder of Liberty Call Deals.

Welcome, and thank you for stopping by. I have been coding since I was a kid. I served in the Army as an Arabic linguist, then built a tech career in the Intelligence Community. Now I am earning my degrees in computer science and AI. I built this site to give back to the veterans and families who have given so much.

Self-taught from the start

My first computer was my grandmother’s Texas Instruments. I was a kid, and I was hooked. From there I taught myself Unix, Linux, HTML and Perl.

Most of what I know, I learned by building things. I still learn that way today.

Army service

I joined the Army in 1994 and went through basic training at Fort Jackson. I trained as an Arabic linguist at the Defense Language Institute and Goodfellow Air Force Base. Then I served overseas as a translator. Serving with fellow soldiers shaped who I am.

Front end, then back end

After the Army, I turned my love of coding into a career in the Intelligence Community. I started as a front-end developer, working in JavaScript, HTML, CSS and some Java. In time I took on back-end work as well.

My first Agile team taught me a lot. Code reviews and daily Scrum meetings showed me how to build in small steps, test everything and work as one team.

From code to leading tech

Over time I moved from writing code to leading technology projects. I created a technology leadership role, helped build a new team and hired its staff.

I led projects that moved paper processes to digital tools. I also helped teams share what they know online. The best part was helping people do their work more easily.

Back in school

Now I am earning degrees to match what I taught myself. At Campus, I am in the associate degree program in business administration with an Applied AI concentration. At Indiana Tech, I am completing a bachelor of arts in computer science.

Next is a master’s degree in computer science with a focus on artificial intelligence. My goal is to lead AI projects that help people and businesses put AI to good use.

I am completing my education through VA Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E). If you have a service-connected disability, it may help you reach your goals too.

Thinking about Campus? I would love to have you there. Start your application with my referral link. You may qualify for a $500 friends and family scholarship. College is better with friends.

Full disclosure: if you use my link, Campus gives me a referral credit toward my own schooling. It is the only thing I ask for on this site, and it helps you too.

Why I built this site

Veterans Day offers are spread across hundreds of websites. I wanted one free, trusted place where veterans and their families could find them.

I designed and built Liberty Call Deals myself, with help from AI coding tools. It is a way to put what I am studying to work for our community. It is my own project, and I make no money from it.

My company: Mildred & Rose

Mildred & Rose is my service-disabled veteran and woman-owned business in Los Angeles. It offers notary services and management consulting.

Liberty Call Deals is separate from Mildred & Rose. This site does not sell anything.

My schools and the VA do not run or endorse this site. I share them only as part of my own story.
